Client-centered Practice
I always find it to be really interesting when I can see core concepts of occupational therapy at work in health care professions in general. When going through my grandmother’s Leukemia, I was able to see the importance of client-centered practice. One of the first things my father said when he met her oncologist was he was the only doctor they saw who actually cared about what my grandmother wanted. He was the one who worked with her when my family was deciding between home health and hospice. My family had a bit of a disagreement on which was the best option. Once he realized the constant disagreement, he ended up coming in and thoroughly explaining the difference before asking what she wanted. She wanted hospice and this ended up being the best option for her. My grandmother had many hospice nurses coming in and out, so while I was there I would have casual conversation with them. One day, a nurse came in and was talking to me about her sister, who also died of cancer. He...
Hi Macy!
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome that your FWE allowed you to get so much practice! My FWE also allowed me to take the lead with treatment sessions, and sometimes I would also freeze for a minute and make sure I was comfortable enough to go through with it! But if you never practice with a real patient then you'll never really learn! Overall, it sounds like you had a great experience where you were able to learn a lot!
I never even thought about looking over evaluation information, but i'll definitely be adding that to my list! Before our acute care evaluation sim lab, I was freaking out because I had never done anything like that before. So when I first saw an IP Rehab evaluation (and was able to compare and contrast the two), I realized that it will all just come with practice! Even though I'm not in acute care or IP Rehab for my Level 2 Fieldwork, it never hurts to look over the evaluation portion! Great video, Macy, and thanks for sharing!

P.S. I knew you'd do your video in front of your plants! :)
Macy, thank you so much for sharing your experience! I think it's incredible you were able to see the same clients throughout your stay and get some hands-on experience with them. I'm glad you were able to work with them throughout their healing process and even get to see what environments you are discharging them into. I need help with understanding diagnoses as well and look forward to learning more about them as well! Great post!
ReplyDeleteMacy, it sounds like you had a great learning experience! It's great that you were able to be so hands on during this experience. I would be overwhelmed to have to choose activities for the clients, but i'm sure it got easier throughout the two weeks with the practice! Can't wait to hear more! Have a good break!
